-Music is humanly organized sound
Three main categories of music
- Classical
- Folk
- Popular
Classical
-Often requires formal training and a lengthy period of practice, usually years, before a musician is considered competent
~Tends to be more complex than folk (Not always true_
Folk
-Usually learned through an informal process and, by comparison, has a relatively quick learning curve.
Popular
-Quite often rooted in, or at least inspired by, classical or folk music from its respective culture
In the Modern era for Popular music
-Driven primarily by the music business
John Lomax
-Father and son began traveling throughout the US to record musicians of various ethnic groups particularly African Americans
-There initial intent was to preserve music that they considered endangerment
-They discovered musical legends
~Huddie “Leadbelly” Ledbetter
-The son continued the work mostly in Europe and the Caribbean
Moses Asch
-Founder of Folkways Record, also took an interest in recording ethnic music
Thomas Edison
- Created the Cylinder Recording
- Which started the uproar of the music industry by creating a business
Paul Simon
-Created an album called “Graceland”
-The music featured the Republic of South Africa style
-This motivated record company executives and other music industry leaders to agree upon a single moniker (world music) to promote their growing catalogs of international popular artists
~Used to be described as “world beat” or “ethno-pop”
World Music
-The term has come into common usage to describe international artists of popular, folk, and classical genres outside the Euro-American mainstream, even as many international popular artists are increasingly making headway into global media culture.
Ethnomusicologists
- An academic discipline that focuses on world music and its cultural associations
- They believe all music is world music
