Module 1-1 and 1-2 Flashcards
What is Statistics?
A way of reasoning along with data collection of tools and methods designed to help us understand the world with the use of data
What is Data?
Values without context
What is a Population of Interest?
The entire collection of individuals
What is a Parameter?
A numerical summary that describes a characteristic of the population
What is a Statistic?
A numerical summary that describes a characteristic of the sample
What does ȳ mean?
The average of a statistic
What does s mean?
The standard deviation (statistic)
What does r mean?
Correlation (statistic)
What does b mean?
Regression coefficient (statistic)
What does p̂ mean?
Proportion (statistic)
What does μ mean?
Parameter
What does σ mean?
Standard deviation of a population
What does ρ mean?
Correlation of a population
What does β mean?
Regression coefficient of a population
What does P mean?
The proportion of a population
What does Who mean?
Who did we collect the data from
Who can you collect data from?
Subjects/Participants Populations Samples Respondents Experimental units
What are Respondents?
Individuals who answer a survey
What are Experimental units?
Animals, Plants, and inanimate objects
What is the what in the 5 w’s?
What characteristic or variable are you monitoring
What is the Why in the 5 w’s?
Why are you doing this? What is your reason for collecting data?
What is the When and Where in the 5 w’s?
Knowing when and where the data are collected, can give us some nice information about the context
What is the How?
How is the data being collected
What are Variables?
Variables are characteristics recorded about each individual
What are the types of Variables?
Categorical (Qualitative)
Numerical (Quantitative)
What do Categorical (Qualitative) variable do?
Places a subject into one or several groups or categories
What are the two types of Categorical Variables?
Nominal
Ordinal
What are Nominal Variables?
Categorical Variables with no order
What are Ordinal Variables?
Categorical Variables with order
What are the two types of Numerical (Quantitative) variables?
Discrete
Continuous
What are Discrete variables?
When they can only take on discrete values
What are Continuous variables?
When they can take on any value in a given interval
What kind of variable is something like student ID?
A categorical variable with one individual in each category
