A word, phrase or clause that describes something or makes its meaning more specific.
What can modifiers function as?
Can function as an adjective or adverb
What do modifiers that function as adjectives modify?
A noun or pronoun
What can single word modifiers be?
Normal adjectives or determiners
What are the different types of determiners?
Possessive determiner (my, your)
Demonstrative determiner (this, those)
Quantifiers (many, some, two)
Interrogative adjectives (which, what)
Articles (a, an, the)
What does a modifier functioning as an adverb modify?
It modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb
What are the three most common adverbial phrases?
Prepositional phrases
Infinitive phrases

What are the properties of an adverbial clause?
They modify verbs
Contains a subject and a verb
It is a dependent clause
Starts with a subordinating conjunction
What do you call a modifier that comes before whatever it is you’re modifying?
“Premodifier”
What do you call a modifier that comes after whatever it’s modifying?

What is a misplaced modifier?
A word or group of words that does not link clearly to what it is intended to modify. Making the sentence wrong

Limiting modifier
Squinting modifier
Dangling modifier
Restrictive modifier
What is a limiting modifier?
Where are limiting modifiers placed?
-Words that limit things
-directly before the word that they modify
What are squinting modifiers?
They can either describe the words before or after them
What are dangling modifiers?
-Words or phrases that explain another word or phrase
-they appear in the wrong sequence in a sentence
