Modified Divine Command Theory Flashcards
Who created MDCT?
Robert Adams
What does it focus on?
God as a benevolent creator
Which Horn does it reject? Why?
Horn 2, says that Horn 1’s focus on morality becoming arbitrary is nonsense, as a loving God would not make murder right, for example.
What does he change Horn 1 to say?
“X is right because a LOVING God commands it”
When does MDCT fail?
When the Euthyphro Dilemma is correct (concludes that morality cannot be identified as what is loved by God).
What does Robert Adams believe?
That any action that is contrary to what God commands is ethically wrong.
If God switched morality so that murder was right, would Adams agree with this?
No, he says that a loving God would not do this and therefore murder would still be morally wrong.
Does Adams care about God’s omnipotence?
A bit, but definitely not as much as benevolence, which is where his focus is.
