Modern Technology in Sport Flashcards
What is a prosthetic?
An artificial device to substitute a defective part of the body
What is a hypoxic chamber?
Sealed room that can simulate high altitude
What is precision hydration?
Monitoring sodium loss (sweating) -> leads to more effective replacement
When is modern technology used in sport?
Health/body screening Make prosthetics Rehab and elite training facilities Improved surfaces/lighting Composite materials in rackets (lighter) Improved footwear designs Better physio testing Gait analysis to avoid injury HR/GPS/Fitbits to monitor activity
How has modern technology reduced participation?
Cost of equipment/facilities -> inc inequality AC vs EC/LIDC
Alternatives (e.g computer games) ->make people less likely to be active/take part
Advantages and examples of modern technology on a fair outcome:
Make right decision Can check whilst play is ongoing (rugby) Basketball (shot clock/ at the buzzer) Third Umpire in cricket Hawk Eye in Tennis VAR in football Improved doping/foul play detection
Disadvantages of modern technology on a fair outcome:
Officials feel under pressure to use technology all the time
Media can highlight mistakes
Doping and gene therapy advancements -> harder to detect
Drug detection cannot keep up with drug development
Advantages of modern technology on entertainment:
Increased play back Live action replays Slow-mo / freeze frames Giant screens Multiple camera angles
Disadvantages of modern technology on entertainment:
Poor performance can be analysed instantly
Constant interruptions can ruin flow of game
Reduce number of people attending events live
What is gene doping?
Inserting DNA to enhance athletic performance
Outgrowth of gene therapy
What is gene therapy?
Use of genes and inserting DNA to restore function/ treat disease
Give an example of gene doping:
EPO
Scientists can artificially produce EPO in the body to inc RBC count
