Modern Medicine 1900-present Flashcards

1
Q

What and when was the first medical scan invented

A

1895 , Wilhelm röntgen discovers x rays. That could pass through soft flesh but less through bone. Then photographic film created simple X-ray images, by directing X-rays into body parts infront of photographic plate. (Used in ww1)

Q

What was the significant if the X-rays?

A

-In ww1 (curie prompted frontline ambulances used this)
-this allowed surgeons to be more precise and prevent infection and blood loss
-exposed to radiation. So increased chance of cancer(Marie Currie died from over exposure . Causing radiation)

Q

What and when was the NHS

A

5th July 1948, provided free health care. Based on individual health needs, but not health. Everyone could access doctors, hospitals, opticians.

Prompted campaign ‘couch to 5k’ shows benefits of running. Reduce heart disease and type 2 diabetes

Q

What was the House and town planning act, and why was it significant?

A
  1. This cleared slums. Built 700,000 new homes. Local council were pushed to provide new homes

-so post war housing programs were planned. Caused Rise of council housing

Further continued in 1946 new towns act to demolish slums

Q

What did Francis crock and James Watson discover in 1953?

A

They discovers the molecular structure for DNA called the double helix. Explained that it contain genes of human characteristics.

Later in 1990 human genome project, led by Watson. To discover more about genes. In 2003 human genome project completed

Q

Why is understanding human genes important?

A

-provide information about inherited diseases(asthma)

-10,000 genetic decisions. Can be identified on fetus before birth

Q

What is the significance of the govermant smoking campaigns?

A

25% in 1982 to 8% in 2006 15 year olds have stopped smoking

-as smoking caused lung cancer. Prevented poeple getting disease

11
Q

what are the treatments for lung cancer?

A

using radiotherapy- involves putting radiation at the lungs to kill the cancer( use targetd x rays and gamma rays, radiation discoverd 1896-1898)

using chemotherapy; the use of drugs to treat cancer. which are injected into the blood stream9( discovered in world war 2)

12
Q

how are people diagnosed with lung cancer?

A

-doctors use computed tomography to give detailed image of the lungs. identifying the cancer

-use of chest xrays: these show if there is anything n the lungs which shouldn’t be there.

14
Q

what is blood transfusion and how was it discovered?

A

transfusing blood into the body, when there was a loss of blood for patients

-in (1900) Karl Landsteiner discovered certain blood groups cannot mix, as blood clots would form. so it was sugested if the patients blood matchd the blood donors, then the transfusion would take place

-later in (1914) doctors discovered that the chemical sodium citrate could stop blood clots. which allowed blood to be stored outside the body. in (1917) the method lead to the vital development of blood banks at the battle of Cambrai

-(1946) the British nation blood transfusion service set up.

15
Q

what are transplants, and when were they discovered?

A

in ww1, a technique called skin transplantation was developed, which could transplant organs, like kidneys, livers and lungs. Although at first it was rejected by the body due to the body thinking it was a virus.

16
Q

what are the limitations of transplants

A

there was no immunosuppressant drugs which could stop the immune system attacking the trasnplant.

{wasn’t until the 1970s, that an effective immunosuppressant drug was developed to make transplants safer.}

17
Q

what is robot assisted surgery?

A

was introduced in 1985, which allowed sergions to make smaller cuts to the body. resulted in less body scars, less infection and quicker wound healing.

18
Q

what is keyhole surgery and why is it significant?

A

technique developed in 1980s. this left patient with small scars. allowing patients to recover quickly. involves endoscope making small cuts, to allow surgeons to see inside the body.

it can be use to investigate cases of pain or infertility.

19
Q

what lifestyle factors increased disease?

A

-smoking causes lung cancer(20% cancer deaths was lung cancer in uk today)

-obesity increases heart disease

-excessive alcohol causes liver disease

-over exposure to ultras violet radiation causes skin cancer

20
Q

who was Dmitri ivanovsky, and why was he significant?

A

a russian botanist,

in (1892) he investigated ‘mosiac’. a disease on tobacco that killed plants. he discovered that the cause for the disease was an extremely small microbe. His ideas where later developed by dutch botanist, martinus bejerinck in (1898), who found the microbes had different properties, called a virus.

this was significant:
-lead to succesful treatment
-development of antivirals to help stop growth of infection
but:
-you could not prescribe antibiotics

21
Q

who was gerhard Domagk and why was he significant?

A

he was a german microbiologist who discovered the send magic bullet, prontosil

in (1933) discovered a red dye, prontosil stopped streptococcus microbes poisoning rest of the body. he used it on his duaghter in (1935) to help her recover from her injury. although the side affects were damage on liver and kidney.

22
Q

what is diphtheria and how did the government campaign against it

A

-diphtheria is a contagious disease caused by bacteria in the nose and the throat. causing paralysis
-in (1940) there was 60,000 cases and 3000 deaths.

the govermant started a vaccination campaign, which involved posters, and radio broadcasts. this was succeful, as it droped cases to 38, with thre only being six deaths in (1957)

23
Q

WHAT WAS THE GREAT SMOG AND HOW DID THE GOVERMANT CAMPAGHN AGAINST IT?

A

in 1952, coal fires caused air pollution, lead to breathing conditions like asthma and bronchitis . resulting in 4000 deaths in London.

the government then passed laws hoping to reduce air pollution

24
Q

what is obesity and how did the government campaign against it?

A

obesity is when there is too much fat in the body, caused from a less active lifestyle.

in response to this, the government launched a change for life campaigns, with the aim to improve diets and promote daily exercise
