Modern materials Flashcards
What are modern materials?
Modern materials will continue to evolve as technology advances. They are developed through the invention of new or improved processes, for example as a result of man-made materials or human intervention.
Difference between a smart material and modern material
Modern materials are not ‘smart materials’ because they do not react to external change.
Examples of smart materials?
graphene, metal foams, titanium, coated metals, liquid crystal displays (LCDs), nanomaterials, teflon, corn starch polymers
Kevlar features and uses
Features: Aramid fibres with high cut and heat resistant properties.
Uses: Body armour, cut-proof gloves and aprons, aerospace applications, surfboard components, puncture-resistant bicycle tyres
