Models of Communication Flashcards
Refers to the conceptual frameworks or theories that explain the way of human communication. It also represents the entire process of communication between the sender and the receiver.
Communication Model
A one-way interaction where feedback is not present. The primary communication model. It also represents the one-way process of communication.
- for mass communication
- no concept of feedback and noise
- commonness is not always the result
linear communication model
Types of Linear Communication Model
- Aristotle’s Model
- Lasswell’s Method
- Shannon & Weaver’s Model
- Berlo’s SMCR Model
- First and earliest linear model
- mainly focused on speaker and speech. It can be broadly divided into 5 primary elements: Speaker, Speech, Occasion, Audience and Effect.
- is a speaker centered model as the speaker has the most important role in it and is the only one active.
Aristotle’s Model of Communication
Describes who is saying something, which channel is used to convey the messages, who the message is aimed at and what effect the message has.
Lasswell’s Model
represents the process of communication in its simplest form. Its acronym stands for Sender, Message, Channel, and Receiver. it describes the different components that form the basic process of communication.
Berlo’s SMCR Communication Model
This model is specially designed to develop the effective communication between sender and receiver. Also they find factors which affecting the communication process called “Noise”. At first the model was developed to improve the Technical communication. Later it’s widely applied in the field of Communication.
The model deals with various concepts like Information source, transmitter, Noise, channel, message, receiver, channel, information destination, encode and decode
- mother of all communication model
Shannon & Weaver’s Model
describes communication as a process in which participants alternate positions as sender and receiver and generate meaning by sending messages and receiving feedback within physical and psychological contexts
- there is existence of technology
- concept of feedback
- convergence model (describe’s communication not as an event but a process)
- becomes linear if sender doesn’t respond
interactive communication model
Father of Oral Communication
Wilbur Schramm
communicator’s communicate their message based on their field of Experience. The receivers of this message have their own field of experience while decoding this message and giving a feedback. The more the field of experience’s overlapped, the better was the understanding of the message.
schramm’s model
tells that communication in circular and continuous, without a beginning or an end. Also introduced the concept of feedback.
- communication can be observed at any point of the circle
White’s model
model of communication that refers to the continuous exchange of information where both the sender and receiver are involved in the process and take turns to communicate messages. The participants are known as communicators and can be either human beings or machines
- has target/goal
- interpersonal
- simultaneous and instant feedback
- non-discriminatory and successful
- encourages non verbal communication
- has room for a lot of noise
transactional communication model
This Transactional Model of Communication states that giving and receiving messages is reciprocal. This means that both communicators (the sender and the receiver) are responsible of the effect and effectiveness of the communication.
Barnlund’s Communication Model
