What is Degg’s model?

A

Degg’s model shows how an overlap between a hazardous geographical event with a vulnerable population can lead to disaster.
The greater the overlap, then the larger the disaster

What is the Pressure and Release (PAR) model?

A

Disaster risk= hazard + vulnerability
A) Hazards include volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, flooding, drought, storms, landslides, pests and disease
B) Vulnerability is split into 3 parts:
1) Root causes- Limited access to; power, structures, resources.
Ideologies; political and economic systems
2) Dynamic pressures- Lack of; appropriate skills, training, local investment, press freedom, ethical standards in public life
Macro forces; Rapid pop-change, rapid urbanisation, deforestation, arms expenditure, debt repayment
3) Unsafe conditions; fragile physical environment and local economy, vulnerable society, public actions

The Egan Wheel shows how different aspects can make a community sustainable, and is used to see what can be improved. The sections include:

E) Equity- Fair for everyone
F) Economy- Thriving
