Models Flashcards
What is conceptual modelling?
Representation of ideas, aims to outline the principles, processes and basic functions of a design or system.
What are the types of conceptual models?
Graphical models (2D drawings, diagrams, sketches)
Physical models (3D, different materials)
CAD models (Computer aided design)
Advantages and disadvantages of concept models
A: Explore possibilities, allows for user input, error reduction, representation of use.
D: very simple, not final product, not accurate materials or proportions.
What is graphical modelling?
2D representations of an idea. They are ways for a designer to quickly explore and communicate possibilities to users or their design team.
Types of graphical models
- Sketching (quickly explore ideas and directions)
- Orthographic drawings (2D, show the sides of the product)
- Isometric drawings (3D, show the shape and form)
- Part and assembly (exploded or assembly drawings)
- Perspective drawings (show object as if seen from a single point, represent space)
What is Computer Aided Design?
The development and analysis of a design or system using computer software.
What is a physical model?
A 3D, tangible representation of a design or system. Used to obtain information about ergonomics, structure and aesthetics.
Types of physical models
- Scale models: smaller or larger than a system.
- Aesthetic models: model developed to look and feel like the real product, used to evaluate user appeal or in ergonomic testing, but not functional.
- Prototypes: replicate an idea to test and learn from it. (functionality).
- Instrumented models: equipped to take measurements to provide accurate quantitative feedback.
