Materials Flashcards
What is a thermoplastic?
A thermoplastic has weak secondary bonds between its molecule chains. Therefore, they can be heated and reformed.
What are thermoset plastics?
Thermoset plastics have strong primary bonds between their molecule chains. This means that it cannot be remolded once formed, and will burn if heated.
Advantages of thermoplastics
Low production costs
Easily injected into molds
Ideal for uses requiring flexibility
Can be reshaped
Advantages of thermosetting plastics
Heat-resistant and rigid
Ideal for uses that require strength and dimensional stability
Where does softwood come from?
From coniferous trees (have cones and needle-like leaves)
Properties of softwood
Low density, open grain (absorbent).
More flexible, less strong in tension.
Generally lighter colored, usually used for low-cost furniture.
Fast growing (renewable source).
Where does hardwood come from?
Hardwood trees, with broad leaves and bear fruit.
Properties of hardwood
More hardness and water resistance.
Stronger in tension and less flexible.
Smoother, consistent grain and wide rage of colors.
Slow growing, considered non-renewable.
Used for high quality furniture.
