PE Operations and Activities

Operational Preparation of the Environment (OPE):
The conduct of activities inlikely or potential areas of operations to prepare and shape the operational environment. (FM 3-18 pg 3-14 para 3-66)`
Advance Force Operations (AFO):
Operations conducted to refine the locationof specific, identified targets and further develop the operational environment for near-term missions. Also called AFO. (FM 3-18 pg 3-14 para 3-67)
Intelligence Operations (Intel Ops):
The variety of intelligence andcounterintelligence tasks that are carried out by various intelligence organizations and activities within the intelligence process. (FM 3-18 pg 3-14 para 3-68)
Army Special Operations Forces (ARSOF):
Those Active and ReserveComponent Army forces designated by the Secretary of Defense that arespecifically organized, trained, and equipped to conduct and support specialoperations. (JP 3-05 / FM 3-18 Glossary 2)

Special Reconnaissance (SR)
- Conducted as a special operation in hostile, denied, or politically sensitive environments
- Information of strategic or operational significance
- Military capabilities not normally found in conventional forces.
Reconnaissance (Recon/Recce):
A mission undertaken to obtain, by visual observation or other detection methods, information about the activities and resources of an enemy or adversary, or to secure data concerning the meteorological, hydrographic or geographic characteristics of a particular area. (JP 2-0 / ADRP 1-02 pg 1-78)
Surveillance:
The systematic observation of aerospace, surface or subsurface areas, places, persons, or things by visual, aural, electronic, photographic, or other means. (JP 3-0 / ADRP 1-02 pg 1-91)
Special Operation (SO):
Operations requiring unique modes of employment, tactical techniques, equipment, and training often conducted in hostile, denied, or politically sensitive environments and characterized by one or more of the following: time sensitive, clandestine, low visibility, conducted with and/or through indigenous forces, requiring regional expertise, and/or a high degree of risk.
Hostile Environment
Operational environment in which host government forces, whether opposed to or receptive to operations that a unit intends to conduct, do not have control of the territory and population in the intended operational area
Denied Area
An area under enemy or unfriendly control in which friendly forces cannot expect to operate successfully within existing operational constraints and force capability. (JP 3-05 / ADRP 3-05 / ATP 3-05.1) (Army) An area that is operationally unsuitable for conventional forces due to political, tactical, environmental, or geographical reasons. It is a primary area for special operations forces
Sensitive
An agency, installation, person, position, document, material, or activity requiring special protection from disclosure that could cause embarrassment, compromise, or threat to the security of the sponsoring power
