MOD B Flashcards
What is Intelligence
Intelligence is both a function and a process that enables the Army to conduct ULO
What does the Intelligence Warfighting Function do?
executes the INTELLIGENCE PROCESS by employing the INTELLIGENCE DISCIPLINES to produce the INTELLIGENCE PRODUCTS
Intel and JIIM
Intelligence is inherently JIIM and leverages the intelligence enterprise
What is the purpose of Intelligence?
To support commanders and staffs in gaining situational understanding of Operational Environment (OE)
What does Intelligence support?
supports the planning, execution, and assessment of operations (Operations Process)
What is the most important role of intelligence?
to support commanders and decision makers
Relationship of Data, Information, and Intelligence
OE + (Collection) = Data
Data + (Processing and Exploitation) = Information
Information + (Analysis and Production) = Intelligence
The Intelligence Process Cycle
- Plan and Direct
- Collect
- Produce
- Disseminate
Continuously Analyze and Assess
Indicator
-an item of information that reflects the intention or capability of an adversary “to adopt or reject a COA”. Predictive analysis.
Indicator
-an item of information that reflects the intention or capability of an adversary “to adopt or reject a COA”. Predictive analysis.
Specific Information Requirements (SIR)
- Indicators in question form
- Provides what, when, where to look for to facilitate collection asset selection
- Detailed as possible
- SIR for each IR based on it
Specific Orders Request (SOR)
an order/task given to a collector, asset, or unit designated to answer SIR.
“Report one or more vehicles or one or more personnel crossing the border IVO PQ4538”
Named Area of Interest (NAI)
a city, section of a border, a point on a mobility corridor large enough to encompass activity. Also consider assets available
Target Area of Interest (TAI)
an area or point along an infiltration route or a mobility corridor; point within an NAI
Collection Requirements Management (CRM)
- Development and control of collection, processing, exploitation, and/or reporting requirements resulting in:
- direct tasking of assets of which the collection manager has authority
- or-
- The generation of tasking requests to collection management authorities
- Defines what intelligence systems must collect
- Develops SIR/SOR sets from teh consolidated, validated, and prioritized list of PIR/IR, CDRs intent, objectives, and the current situation
Collection Operations Management (COM)
- Direction, scheduling, and control of specific collection operations and associated processing, exploitation, and reporting resources
- Includes the selection and tasking of specific assets and sensors
- COM process develops details to specify how the collection occurs
- Synchronizes the timing of collection with the operational scheme of maneuver and with other intelligence operations: processing and exploitation, analysis and production, dissemination
- Selects assets best suited to collect the information needed to satisfy the SIR

Intelligence Synchronization is……
the “art” of “integrating information collection” and “intelligence analysis with operations” to effectively and efficiently support decision making
Two Key Elements of Commander’s Critical Information Requirement (CCIR)
Priority Intelligence Requirement (PIR)
Friendly Force Information Requirement (FFIR)
Priority Intelligence Requirement (PIR)
- Usually drives a decision
- Identifies the information about enemy and other aspects of the OE the commander considers most important
- managed for commander by intel officer using collection management
Keys to good Priority Intelligence Requirements
- Asks one question
- Focus on a specific fact, event, or activity
- Are linked to a location (NAI) and time / event
- Tied to a decision point
- Indicates a LTIOV (last timely information is of value)
- Limit the number of PIRs to focus Information collection
Good PIR: time and place specific, asks one question, and result in supporting one of the Commander’s operational decision points
Friendly Force Information Requirement (FFIR)
- information the commander and staff need to understand the status of friendly force and supporting capabilities
- mission, troops and support available, and time available for friendly forces
- the operations officer manages FFIRs for the commander
Essential Elements of Friendly Information (EEFI)
- critical aspect of a friendly operation that, if known by the enemy, would subsequently compromise, lead to failure, or limit success of the operation
- EEFIs are not CCIRs but have the same priority
- “EEFIs establish elements of information to protect rather than ones to collect”
Commander’s Critical Information Requirement(CCIR)
- Applicable only to specified by a commander for a specific operation
- Situation dependent - directly linked to a current or future mission
- Focused on predictable events or activities
- Time-sensitive - CCIR answers are reported to the commander immediately by any means available
Plan and Direct
-most important step due to limited time and resources. Commander directs the intel
-Staff (S2/S3)
-Research and Intelligence Reach
-Collection Management
-Establishing Formats and Standards for Products
-Synchronized and integrated info collection plan focused on the CDRs CCIR
and other requirements
-Generating Intelligence Knowledge
- Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB)
- helps S2/J2/G2 focus and direct the intel process
- prioritize and validate IRs
- develop collection plan based on gaps/CCIR
Predictive vs Functional Analysis
Collect
Synchronized to provide critical information / intelligence at key times throughout the phase of the operation
Produce
- development of information and intelligence through the “analysis” of collected information and existing intel
- must be timely, relevant, accurate, predictive, and tailored to facilitate situational understanding and decision making
Dissemination
- Proper and timely dissemination is required to support situational understanding and decision making
- Must be provided to the Decision Maker
- Appropriate Format
- Appropriate Channels
- Command
- Staff
- Technical
Two Continuing Activities
- Analyze
- Predictive Analysis
- Assess (ensure intelligence synchronization)
- assess the effectiveness of information collection effort
Who Drives the Intelligence Process?
Commanders
PIR Development
Associated with a decision that affects mission
Joint Intelligence Process
Plan and Direct Collection Process and Exploit Analyze and Produce Disseminate and Integrate
Mission in center
Evaluate and Feedback surrounds all
When does collection begin?
Collection begins as soon as mission requirements are identified.
What is the Purpose of information collection?
To provide the Commander detailed, timely, and accurate intelligence to support situational understanding and decision making
What is information collection?
An activity that synchronizes and integrates the planning and employment of sensors and assets as well as the processing, exploitation, and dissemination systems in direct support of current and future operations
Information Collection Activities
-Commander’s Input
Developing collection management tools:
Information collection matrix.
Information collection synchronization matrix.
Information collection overlay.
Describe an Information Collection Matrix (ICM)
Links PIRs to indictors, SIRs, NAI, TAIs
Provides detailed Collection and Reporting Requirements
Not a tasking document
At which part of which phase of Collection Management does FUOPs become CUOPs ?
At the end of Mission Management
What is the purpose of a NAI overlay?
NAIs help to focus information collection by visually depicting NAI Locations
