Mod 8 - Chapter 14: Heart Flashcards
Where can the strongest beat be felt or heard?
Apex - lower left
Where is the base of the heart found?
Upper right - broadest part
Where did the vessels enter and leave the heart
The base
*What is the name of the double walled sac that surrounds the heart?
Pericardium
*What is the name of the outer most layer of the pericardium? And what type of tissue does it consist of?
Fibrous pericardium - A loose fitting sack of strong connective tissue
*What is the name of the layer that covers the hearts surface?
Serous Pericardium
The pericardial cavity exist between the parietal layer and the visceral layer; it contains a small amount of serous fluid. What is the role of the serous fluid?
Helps prevent friction at the hearts base
The heart wall has three layers. Where are they located and what do they consist of?
Endocardium - lines the heart chambers, covers the valves, and continues into the vessels. consists of a thin layer of squamos epithelial cells
Myocardium - Composed of cardiac muscle, forms the middle layer. It’s the thickest of the three layers and performs the work of the heart.
Epicardium - consist of a thin layer of squamous epithelium cells, covers the heart surface
The heart contains four Hollow chambers. What are the names of the two upper chambers and the 2 lower chambers?
Upper = atria Lower = Ventricles
What blood vessels carry blood away from the heart?
Arteries
What blood vessels return blood to the heart?
Veins
What blood vessels connect the smallest arteries to the smallest veins?
Capillaries
What blood vessels supply the heart itself with blood?
Coronary arteries
Where does the heart receive blood from the body or lungs
Atria
Which part of the heart serves as pumps, receiving blood from the atria and then pumping it either to the lungs or the body?
Ventricles
Lungs - right ventricle
Body - left ventricle
