Mod 8 Flashcards
What are the 2 basic types of containers
Pressurized
Non Pressurized
What are the parameters for liquid non bulk
less than or equal to 119 gallons
What are the parameters for liquid bulk
Greater than 119 gallons
What are the parameters for liquid Intermediate bulk
119 - 793 gallons
What are the parameters for gas non bulk
Less than or equal to 1000 lbs of water capacity
What are the parameters for gas bulk
Greater than 1000 lbs of water capacity
What are the parameters for solid non bulk
less than 882lbs
What are the parameters for solid bulk
Greater than 882 lbs
What are the 2 types of containers that are designed to hold hazardous materials in:
Transportation (railway and highway)
Fixed Facility
These are used for liquids, and are in glass or plastic “bottles” that may be encased in an outer packaging, a wooden crate, or a plywood drum.
Carboys
These consist of a form fitting, expanded polystyrene box encasing one or more bottles.
Multi cell packaging
The DOT regulated chemicals, the max bottle capacity is 4L’s ad up to six of these bottles may be placed in one multi-cell packaging.
Multi Cell Packaging
These are used for liquid and solids. They are made of metal, plastic, fiberboard or wood.
Drums and Cans
The typical drum capacity is typically how many gallons
55 gallons
These are used to hold damaged or leaking non bulk packaging for repacking or disposal
Salvage Drums
Drums have 2 types of heads, what are they?
Removable (open head) non removable (closed head)
The heads, of a drum, are joined to the body by folding the sheets together creating this:
Chime
Some drums, have closures in the head, that are designed to vent pressure
Bungs
These normally contain liquefied, non -liquefied or dissolved gases or mixtures thereof, but also contain liquids or solids under pressure
Cylinders
Cylinders are divided into 2 basic types
Non-insulated
Insulated (Cryogenic)
These are typically made of steel and have rounded shoulders on top. They have a screw-on cap
Non insulated cylinder
These are for refrigerated liquid gases consist of a metal cylinder insulated and contained within an outer protective metal jacket
Insulated (cryogenic) cylinders
These are Rigid or flexible portable packaging which is designed for mechanical handiling
Intermediate Bulk Containers
IBC
Intermediate Bulk Containers
The volume of this container is not more than 793 gallons and not less than 119 gallons
Intermediate Bulk Containers
These are rigid type; top fill opening, bottom discharge piping or opening; designed to be stacked and moved about by forklifts; commonly used for flammable liquids or solids
All Metal Tank
These are rigid type; equipped with a top fill opening, may have top discharge piping or bottom outlet; designed to be stacked and moved about by forklifts, commonly used for corrosive materials
Rigid Polyethylene IBC
These are manufactured from woven fabric, cloth or plastic on top and usually has a bottom discharge; loops or lift rings on the top
Flexible Sack or Bag or Super Sacks
These are used for bulk solids, are a rigid packaging usually made of multi-wall fiberboard or plywood closed faces and completely enclosing the contents. They are designed to be shipped on a pallet and may contain up to 2,000 pounds of solid material
Boxes and Bins (IBCs)
How many gallons of liquid can a pressurized One Ton Container hold?
180 -320 gallons
What are problems of the One Ton Container:
- Subject to thermal, mechanical and chemical stress
- They can BLEVE when exposed to flame impingement
What are the types of damage that can occur to a tank
Crack
Score
Gouge
Dent
Name 6 methods of handling a damaged tank
- Plugging and Patching
- Overpacking damaged containers
- Inverted Overpack Technique
- The Roller Technique
- Angle Roll Technique
- Specialized Kits (Chlorine A and B kits)
What size Chlorine Cylinders does the A Kit fit
100-150 lb chlorine cylinders
What size Chlorine Cylinders does the B Kit fit
1 ton chlorine container
