MOD 7 - OB Terminology Flashcards
FHR
Fetal Heart Rate
inner layer of the amniotic sac, closest to the fetus
amnion
fluid surrounding the fetus; protection, warmth, movement, symmetrical growth
amniotic fluid
cells 5 days after fertilization
blastocyst
outermost layer of the amniotic sac
chorion
fingerlike projections that extend out from the chorion, become fetal vessels which exchange nutrients and waste products from maternal blood
chorionic villi
process of cells dividing in two
cleavage
twins resulting from two zygotes; fraternal twins
dizygotic
one of the three shunts of fetal circulation; links the pulmonary artery with the aorta
ductus arteriosus
one of the three shunts of fetal circulation; shunts half of blood to liver and half to inferior vena cava
ductus venosus
pregnancy outside of the uterus
ectopic pregnancy
developing pregnancy two weeks to the end of the 8th week
embryo
developing human; fetal stage begins in the ninth week
fetus
one of the three shunts of fetal circulation; connects the right and left atrium
foramen ovale
twins resulting from same zygote (identical twins)
monozygotic
32 cells, 3 days post fertilization
morula
substance that causes birth defects
teratogen
gelatinous substance that gives support to the umbilical cord
Wharton jelly
product of egg and sperm uniting
zygote
examiner pushes up on cervix and feels fetus bounce back
ballottement
practice contractions to strengthen the uterus
Braxton Hicks contractions
first “milk”
colostrum
glucose in the urine; sign of diabetes
glycosuria
purple-blue coloration of the cervix when pregnant
Chadwick sign
line in middle of abdomen
linea nigra
curve in spine to support pregnancy weight
lordosis
mask of pregnancy
melasma (chloasma)
craving of non-food items, likely caused by anemia
pica
heartburn; common discomfort of pregnancy due to relaxed esophageal sphincter
pyrosis
stretch marks
striae gravidarum
hypotension when laying on back
supine hypotensive syndrome
diagnostic procedure where needle is inserted into amniotic sac and fluid is obtained; between 15-20 weeks and third trimester
amniocentesis
fetal wellbeing test by ultrasound and non-stress test, total score 10/10; breathing, heart rate, movement, tone, amniotic fluid volume
biophysical profile
sample of chorion take to provide chromosomal studies
chorionic villus sampling
non-medical hired labor support person
doula
due date
estimated date of delivery (EDD)
total number of pregnancies
gravida
very small cranium - likely fetal alcohol syndrome or Zika Virus
microcephaly
woman who has had more than one pregnancy
multigravida
never been pregnant
nulligravida
number of pregnancies carried past 20 weeks
parity
procedure to take a sample of fetal blood for testing, or transfuse blood to fetus
percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS)
fetal movement felt by pregnant person
quickening
ultrasound imaging
sonogram
Last Menstrual Period (first day of flow)
LMP
Estimated Due Date
EDD
Estimated Date of Confinement - Due date
EDC
Pregnant person
gravid
First pregnancy
primigravida
pregnancy past 20 weeks
para
never carried past 20 weeks
nullipara
first pregnancy past 20 weeks
primipara
more than one pregnancy past 20 weeks
multipara
delivered more than 5 pregnancies past 20 weeks
grand multipara “multip”
greater than 20 weeks gestation
viability
miscarriage or abortion before 20 weeks
abortion
20 weeks through the end of the 37th week
preterm
38 weeks through the end of the 40th week
term
the 41st week of pregnancy
postdate
42 weeks and beyond
postterm
how many children currently living (where you would add twins)
living children
pregnancy with two amniotic sacs and two placentas
diamniotic-dichorionic “di-di”
pregnancy with two amniotic sacs and one placenta
diamniotic- monochorionic “mono-di”
pregnancy twins sharing one amniotic sac and one placenta
monoamniotic-monochorionic
too much amniotic fluid; common in diabetic patients
polyhydramnios
too little amniotic fluid; common with HTN, post dates, placental issues
oligohydramnios
fetus measuring large
macrosomia
fetus measuring too small
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)
newborn measuring large
Large for Gestational Age (LGA)
newborn measuring too small
Small for Gestational Age (SGA)
Nurse practitioner who specializes in Obstetrics and Delivery
