mod 6 Flashcards
What is split brain
A surgery that cuts the 2 hemispheres of the brain. initial procedure was to reduce seizures
What is hemispheric specialization
refers to the idea that the brains 2 hemispheres have different functions
what is attention
process of selecting info from the internal and external environments to prioritize for processing
Passive attention
occurs when attentional priorities are set by bottom-up info from an environment
When does selective attention occur
When you attend to one source of info while ignoring other stimuli
Stimulus salience
some stimuli in the environment capture attentions by virtue of their physical properties
Cocktail party effect
a person at a party can be engaged in a conversation and ignore the stuff around them
Dichotic listening task
participant asked to wear headphone playing dif messages in each ear, told to attend to and repeat info from one ear, easy for most but difficult to recite the ignored ear
people with lesions on the right parietal lobe of the cortex lose awareness of______
visual stimuli on the left
stimuli in the neglected field can influence _____ even if they are not consciously aware of it
behaviour
Alpha activity:
awake but relaxed
Sleep spindles:
brief bursts of activity that happen roughly 2-5 times per min during non-rem stages of sleep
K-complexes:
a pattern of neural excitement followed by neural inhibition occurring during stage 2 sleep
Slow wave sleep:
- sleep occuring in stage 3-4 transition to delta activity
- slow wave sleep transitions into rem sleep after around 45 mins
- when sleepwalking occurs
REM
when vivid dreams happen
Insomnia:
inability to fall asleep or stay awake
Conditioned insomnia:
cues for falling asleep (like getting into bed) cause anxiety and the inability to sleep
Idiopathic insomnia:
child onset insomnia, neurological condition resulting in the inability of sleep
Hypersomnia:
excessive sleepiness
Sleep apnea
stop breathign in sleep
Narcolepsy
sudden extreme need for sleep
Hypnagogic hallucionations
hallucinations before sleep
hypnopompic hallucinations
hallucinations before waking up
Biological clocks:
internal clocks that prepare the body for daily, seasonal and annual rhythms
circadian rhythms:
daily internal clocks that tells the body when to sleep and to wake.
Without time cues like light, humans would reverse to a ____ hour clock
25
SCN
structure in brain next to the optic chiasm that sets the bodys circadian clock
Psychoactive drugs:
substances from the environment other than food that affect mood, behaviour, thoughts
Alcohol inhibits the effectiveness of _____
glutamate (neurotransmitter that causes excitatory effects)
