mod 4 types of syringes Flashcards
syringes have 3 parts
barrel - outer, calibrated portion holds meds
plunger- inside barrel pulled out to withdraw and measure air/med and pushed to eject
tip- end, can be either luer-lok or non-luer-lok (slip tip)
- lur-lok- requires special needle twist onto tip and lock into place
- non-luer-lok (slip tip) - requires needles slip onto tip syringe
how to read and measure range capacity
Identify the total liquid capacity of the syringe: 3 mL
Identify the capacity between two adjacent bold (longer) calibrations: 1 mLDivide this measured capacity (1 mL) by the number of spaces within two adjacent bold lines (10 spaces) to find the lowest measurable dose.
Lowest measureable dose: 1 mL ÷ 10 spaces = 0.1 mL (the capacity of each individual calibration)
Identify the minimum and maximum range of doses that may be given within the syringe.
Range: 0.1 mL to 3 mL, in increments of 0.1 mL (tenths of a milliliter)
hypodermic needles
range size 1-60 mL
large capacity (IV syringes) - sizes 5,6,10,12 and higher
- 10 mL capacity and 0.2 mL calibration
small capacity - 3 mL capacity and 0.1 mL calibration
tuberculin syringes
- often for peds and diagnostic purposes (skin test TB), vaccines
- small capacity < 1 mL
- can see hundredths and 10ths millimeter
*** smallest accurate dose is 0.01 mL
typical range syringes in mL, excluding insulin
1-60 mL
needle selection
not just length, but gauge (diameter)
- lower the gauge, wider the diameter
- most used length 3/8 inch to 3 inches
- longer for spec proc (spinal tap)
- fines 32G for skin test and insulin admin
- 18G for blood admin and other viscous subs
ID
intradermal
Small-volume injection
Usually administered as skin test
Usual dose is 0.1 mL
Requires 1-mL syringe
Requires 25- to 30-gauge needle
Approximate needle length 3/8 to 1 1/2 inch
subcut sites for injection
Used for injection of non-irritating substances into subcutaneous fatty tissue
Examples: Insulin or an anticoagulant
Usual doses are up to 1 mL
Requires 25- to 30-gauge needle
Approximate needle length 3838 to 5858 inch
IM injection
Delivers medications for faster absorption
Delivers more concentrated substances
Doses are up to 3 mL at a single site
Requires 20- to 23-gauge needle
Approximate needle length 5858 to 2 inches
other needle selection considerations
Patient size
Location to be administered
Condition of skin
Development of muscle
Type and viscosity of medication
Equipment available
When considering the above factors, take note that a person who is thin, even muscular, with little fatty tissue can use a shorter needle length than a person with excess adipose tissue.
Which syringe features will the nurse focus on when drawing up a correct dose?
- calibration marks
- medication indication
- forward rubber edge plunger head
Which procedures would likely require 32-gauge needles?
- ped insulin
- adult tuberculin testing
Other than tuberculin (PPD) testing, what are the possible uses for tuberculin syringes?
vaccines
diagnostic testing
ped meds
small dose meds
An adult bodybuilder is ordered 3 mL of a medication IM, ventrogluteal. Given the placement of the medication and the patient’s body, what is the best choice for needle length in inches?
1 1/2
A needle of 1 1/2 inch is appropriate. Intramuscular injections are administered into the muscle below the subcutaneous tissue layer, so the needle must be long enough to ensure that the medicine is being injected into the proper tissue. Besides, a muscular patient with very little fatty tissue will not require a longer needle length.
Under what circumstance would an 18-gauge needle be the best choice?
blood trans
viscous meds
