mod 4 types of insulin syringes Flashcards
lo-dose syringe
sizes:
50 units in 0.5 mL total volume
30 units in 0.3 mL total volume
syringe calibration - 1 unit
insulin syringe admin
Single-scale 1-mL syringe
each calibration = 2 units
*often used for pts w/vision difficulties
double-scale 1-mL syringe
calibrations
- even units on one side
- one on the other
use odd side for odd doses and even for even dose
find correct syringe
insulin pumps
insulin usually subcut inject, regular insulin, aspart (Novolog) and glulisine (Apidra) all approved IV admin
*** Insulin NEVER IM
Insulin pumps portable and implantable
- CSII (continuous subcut insulin infusion) - rapid, short-acting insulin continuously
using insulin pump
some with and without tubing
pump with tube- attach pump to infusion set and insert very-fine-gauge cannula from pump-s insulin reservoir into abdomen subcut
*most reservoirs hold 300 units of U-100 rapid- or short-acting insulin
Interruptions:
- can lead to ketoacidosis ** do NOT STOP OR DISCONNECT DEVICE without doing these steps
1. check blood glucose (BG) before disconnecting
2. supply sup insulin
3. plan iv insulin admin if needed
4. test BG after pump reconnect
programming pumps
can deliver basal rate and/or bolus dose
basal rate
- continuous over 24 hrs
- keeps BG stable btw meals and at night
bolus rate
- different rates diff times
poss deliver food time for more food intake
can override set rate for any add activity
advantages insulin pump
portable
implantable
programmable
no need multi injections
where catheter inserted when pump is used
subcut layer
What are the advantages of programming bolus doses using an insulin pump?
- delivers diff rates diff times
- overrides cap for times extra avtivity
- prove programmable extra dosing meal times
Which type of insulin syringe is ideal for patients with vision problems?
single-scale 1-mL
What serious complication can develop if an insulin pump is stopped without supplemental coverage?
ketoacidosis
What is the correct order of the steps necessary to stop or interrupt an insulin pump for a medical intervention? Rearrange them correctly.
Check the blood glucose level before disconnecting the pump.
Supply supplemental insulin that may be needed during the procedure.
Plan for any IV insulin administration that may be needed during the procedure.
Test blood glucose again after reconnecting the pump.
What is the benefit of continuous dosage basal insulin?
keep blood sugar range overnight
