Mod 2: Organisation of cells Flashcards
what are the three different types of organisms?
unicellular, colonial, multicellular
what is a unicellular organism?
it is a single cell that is responsible for all of its own life processes
prokaryotic and eukaryotic unicellular organisms
what are colonial organisms
a group of identical unicellular organisms that can carry out all life processes necessary for life but can also have specialised functions within the colony. This leads to more efficient cell function.
what are multicellular organisms?
organisms that are made up of many different types of cells where similar types of cells group together and perform specialised functions to help the organism function properly.
the specialised cells cannot live independently (unlike colonial and unicellular organisms)
state the hierarchy of structural organisation
atoms –> molecules –> organelles –> cells –> tissue –> organs –> organs systems –> multicellular organism
what are stem cells
undifferentiated cells that can divide many times for a long period of time to make more cells.
can be embryonic or adult stem cells
what is differentiation?
the process stem cells go through to become specialised
when can a cell no longer differentiate?
after a cell has become specialised to form a specific type of cell, it can no longer differentiate to become a different type o cell. they may even lose their ability to divide and make more cells
what are the cells that dont divide constantly?
sex cells (sperm and ova)
what is the importance of cell structure?
the function of a cell is heavily reliant on the structure of it and vice versa
what are the four types of tissue in complex animals?
epithelial, connective, nervous, muscle
