Antibody Functions (4)
- Neutralization
- Opsonization
- Complement Activation
- Effector Cell Activation
Immunoglobulin:
High concentrations in mucosal surfaces
-Genital tract, nasal pharynx, eyes, rectal mucosa
IgA
Immunoglobulin:
-First immune response to response to a foreign antigen
-Very sensitive to binding to antigens, but not specific
Ex:Will cross react to virus types
-Unique: high avidity, binds to antigens but not in a specific manner
-Undergoes affinity maturation
Converts to IgG
IgM
- Very specific
- Not a lot of cross reactivity to IgG against specific proteins
- Can cross placenta barrier
IgG
- specific
- important in response to allergens
- has multiple sites of recognition
- role against parasites (helminths)
- made by B-cells
IgE
- Different compared to others
- forms important role with b-cell receptor
- associated with some autoimmune disorders (arthritis)
