Mod 1 : Section 3 Flashcards
What is a research report
-they describe what was studied, how it was studied and what was found
Types of research reports
- Theses and dissertations
- books
- Presentations at conferences (oral or poster)
- Journal articles
Key elements of Journal articles:
IMRAD format
- Abstract
- Intro
- Method
- Results
- Discussion
- References
Whats in a title
- it conveys key information
- Qualitative: includes central phenomena and group under investigation
- Quantitative: communicates key variables and population
What’s in an Abstract
- it is a concise summary of a research study
- 100-200 words
- answers
- what were the research questions
- what methods were used
- what were the findings
- what are the implications for practice
What is in an introduction
-it aquaints the reader with research problem and its context
-it describes:
-central phenomenon
-study purpose and research questions
-review of related literature
-theoretical or conceptual framework
-significance of and the need for the
study
What is in the Method
- describes how the study was conducted
- Quantitative: research design, the sample the setting, data collection procedures and methods of measurement and data analysis method
-Qualitative: same issues as with quantitative but with a bigger emphasis to describe the researchers efforts
Results for research include:
- presents findings including a description of the study and stat reports
- Quantitative: names of statictical tests used, the value of calculated statistics, statitical significance and if they were significant
-Qualitative: organize findings according to the major themes, processes or categories that were defined in the data. Also utilize raw data
Discussion portion
- they explain what the results mean in relation to the purpose of the study
- researchers are in the best position to find the limitations of their own research
-Quantitative and Qualitative:
- interpretation of the results, clinical and
research implications, study limitations
and the ramifications for the believability
of the results
