Mobility/immobility Flashcards
What are the ABCs of immobility?
Atrophy Breathing - atelectasis Bones - calcium out of bones Bed sores - pressure ulcers Blood pressure - orthostatic hypotension Bladder - urinary stasis Bowel - decrease peristalsis, constipation Clots - DVT Contractures
What is an ataxic gait?
Staggering and unsteadiness
What is a spastic gait?
Walking is stiff and toes appear to catch and drag
What is ataxia?
Impaired muscle coordination
What is atelectasis?
Collapse of alveoli
What is disuse osteoporosis?
Loss of bony matrix
What is a contracture?
Fixation of the joint
What is foot drop?
Foot is permanently fixed in plantar flexion
How is urination affected by immobility?
Urinary stasis occurs
Urinary stasis increases the risk of UTIs and renal calculi
What are some respiratory immobility interventions?
Change positions every 2 hours
Cough and deep breathe every 1-2 hours
What are some cardiovascular immobility interventions?
Assess vital signs upon sitting up
Prevent thrombus formation
What are some elimination immobility interventions?
Adequate hydration
Protection of skin if incontinent
Encourage a fiber-rich diet
What are some psychosocial immobility interventions?
Identify those as risk
Encourage visitors
What is a hand roll?
Roll that maintains the thumb in a slight adduction and in opposition to the fingers
What is a trapeze bar?
