Blood tissue and Immunity Flashcards
What is the normal WBC count?
5,000-10,000 cells/mm3
What are granulocytes?
Polymorphonuclear cells that contain granules of digestive enzymes
Neutrophils
phagocytes
granulocyte
Eosinophils
allergic reaction
granulocyte
Basophils
heparin and histamine
granulocyte
What are agranulocytes?
Mononuclear cells that lack digestive enzymes.
Monocytes
Scavenger cells
Agranulocyte
Lymphocytes
T cells - synthesis of Igs
B cells - synthesis of antibodies
What cell is responsible for cellular immunity?
T-lymphocytes - enter lympoid tissue and seek out microbe
What is responsible for humoral immunity?
B lymphocytes - produce antibodies
Sepsis
systemic inflammatory response to infection
What is systemic inflammatory response syndrome?
Early presenting symptoms of sepsis
Body temp >38C or <36C
Heart rate >90 BPM
Respiratory rate >20 BPM
WBCs >12,000, <4,000, or >10% immature forms
- Neutrophil count <2,000/mm3 is associated with cancer
Progress of an infection
Incubation
Prodromal
Acute phase
Convalescent
What are phases of a febrile episode?
Chill - body tries to increase core temp; pt is cold
Fever - fever reaches the higher set point
Flush - pt experiences diaphoresis (sweating)
