The Moynihan Report (1965)?
The Moynihan Report was a study about the economic position of black Americans by Daniel Moynihan. The report drew attention to high crime rates and the poor living conditions of blacks.
Why did King move up North?
The 1964 civil rights act outlawed segregation in the south but did not do a lot for the Blacks up north.
What effect did the Moynihan Report have?
Johnson commissioned the report thinking that the report would promote economic equality. However, this idea backfired because the report blamed black people for their problems. It got more tense between Johnson and black leaders.
What was the ‘Chicago Freedom Movement’ (1966)?
Represented the alliance of the SCLC and CCCO. MLK used same peaceful protests that worked down south. He targeted education housing and employment. 30,000 turned up - met by huge mobs and violence intensified - heatwave meant everyone got hot and government turned off water. Violence meant Mayor had to negotiate but following re-election his negotiation ignored.
What happened to King after Chicago? (1966)
- CORE saw his tactical mistakes
- Many blacks began to lose faith
- Johnson refused to get involved with him because of Vietnam comments
- Campaign failed to win support of churches.
Significance of MLK’s death? (4 April 1968)
He became a Martyr for his cause - and his death became a symbol. Johnson called for a national day for mourning and the authorities in Memphis gave in to the Sanitation workers. More than 50,000 at MLK’s funeral. Blacks reacted violently and broke out in 130 cities.
