Why did Malcolm X join the Nation of Islam?
There message deeply affected Malcolm X. He changed his name from Malcolm Little - this was given to his family by a slave owner. When released from prison he helped the NOI gain lots more members.
Who was Malcolm X?
Malcolm X grew up in poverty, three of his uncles were killed by whites. His father died when he was six - he dropped out of school when a teacher told him his goals were ‘unrealistic for a nigger’
Why was Malcolm X critical of MLK and the CRM?
He stated that MLK was ‘The White mans uncle Tom’ and argued that groups like the SCLC and the NAACP were taken in by myths. Malcolm X also openly spoke about MLK being payed by the White government to preach love and forgiveness.
What did Malcolm X believe when it came to Self-defence?
Malcolm X said that people did not respect peaceful protests - he said self defence was more powerful than love and forgiveness. He advocated gun ownership for blacks and claimed defending yourself was natural.
Why did Malcolm X break with the NOI?
His relationship soured with Elijah Muhammed due to his fame - and as a result of tension, he left in March 1964.
What was the Organisation of Afro-Anerican Unity (OAAU)
It aimed to re-educate black Americans in order to gain economic security across the world. They organised strikes, school boycotts and social programmes.
Why did Malcolm X have a change in heart after his Hajj?
He saw White and black Muslims living amongst one and other in harmony - and when visiting Africa he saw whites helping blacks out and realised it is possible.
Why was Malcolm X assassinated?
He was killed by Three NOI members 15 times from close range - most probably because he left the group in the first place
