MK 16 System Description Flashcards
What are the 4 major systems of the MK16?
- Housing
- Recirculation
- Electronics
- Pneumatics
What do the 4 major systems do?
Provide constant partial pressure of O2
What does the housing subsystem consist of?
- Housing cover assembly
- Lower housing assembly
- Harness assembly/quick attach buckles
What does the recirculation subsystem consist of?
- mouthpiece/hose assembly
- Scrubber assembly
What does the recirculation system do?
Provides and controls the breathing loop and removes CO2 from the diver’s exhaled gas
What does the Electronics subsystem consist of?
- PEA (lithium battery)
- Primary display
- Secondary display
- 3 O2 sensors
- O2 addition valve
- Cables
What does the electronics subsystem do?
- Measures and analyzes amount of O2 in the diver’s breathing gas and automatically provides required amount of O2
- 2 separate displays that show the condition of the MK16
What does the pnuematics system consist of?
O2 and dil
* Bottle assembly
* regulator
* pressure indcator
*filter
* bypass valve
* addition valve
When looking top down with PEA closest to you, where are the inhalation and exhalation connections
Inhalation - right side
Exhalation - left side
What side is the O2 bypass valve?
Right side
What are the flask FV and pressures?
21 FT3 at 3,000 psig
What is the blowout disk rating?
4500 psig
What is the discharge life of the primary battery
120 hours
What is the operating temp for the MK16
29F - 90F
Where can the engineering notes be found for the MK16 EOD and NSW
NSW - PMS 340
EOD - PMS 408
What does CSAV stand for?
Combat Swimmer Assault Vest
Where are the support screens located in the scrubber assembly?
Directly above and below the canister
Describe the path exhaled gas takes within the canister:
- Exhaled gas travels thru the first moisture absorbent pad
- Gas travels thru the base of the canister into the first (hydrophobic) filter
2a. Filter provides uniform gas distribution - Then thru the absorbent where CO2 is removed
- Then thru a compression pad and scrubber
- Thru the canister lid before flowing thru the upper moisture absorbent pad
- Then outside the canister into the diaphragm
What is the purpose of the diluent addition valve?
Automatically add volume to the breathing loop
How does the diaphragm work?
Controls volume of gas in the breathing loop
* when volume in the breathing loop increases, the diaphragm increases in size until it actuates the dump valve
* When volume in the breathing loop decreases, the diaphragm shrinks until the diluent addition valve is actuated
How does the PEA communicate?
- Receives signals from 3 O2 sensors that tell it what the PPo2 in the breathing loop is
- PEA tells the Primary the condition of the system
- PEA tells the O2 addition valve when to add
- PEA has a depth sensor to switch between .75 and 1.3
What is the error for depth correction to 1.3 PPO2?
+/- 2 at 33FSW
or
+/- 2 above 13 FSW
What exactly tells the PEA whether to send a drive signal to open the O2 addition valve or close the addition valve?
If a majority of the O2 sensors are above a predetermined set-point, the PEA tells the addtition valve to close
If a majority of te O2 sensors are below a predetermined set-point, the PEA tells the addition valve to open
