Mixed review Flashcards
Facilitated diffusion
Increases the rate at which a substances moves across a cell membrane from a high area of concentration to a low.
Explain Fick’s Principle
- Blood must be oxygenated in the lungs (On-loading)
- Blood must reach the tissues (transport)
- Oxygen must move from blood to the tissue cells (off-loading)
Define Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome
Progressive damage of 2 or more organ systems.
i.e.- increased permeability, vasodilation, hyper coagulation
What happens to the medulla when cell death is occurring?
SNS compensation stops
What happens to the hypothalamus when cell death is occuring?
Sensors for ADH release is lost
Describe Myocardial Depressant Factor
MDF comes from ruptured/dead pancreatic cells. Decreases heart function
Describe Platelet Activating Factor
PAF comes from ruptured liver cells. Stimulates platelets to clump together
Hypovolemic Shock
Decreased blood press resulting in hypoperfusion; Blood volume loss
Neurogenic Shock
Vasodilation due to decreased sympathetic tone resulting in hypoperfusion; decreased PVR
List the effects of acidosis which contribute to the progression of shock
- Decreased O2 onloading to Hgb
- Decreased heart contractility (CO)
- Increased capillary permeability- 3rd spacing
- RBCs/platelets stick together- thickens blood
What two pressures are responsible for fluid movement out of the capillary bed?
- Capillary hydrostatic pressure (BP)
- Interstitial oncotic pressure
What two pressures are responsible for fluid movement in to the capillary bed?
- Capillary oncotic pressure
- Interstitial hydrostatic pressure
What two factors have the greatest influence on myocardial oxygen usage?
- Heart rate
- PVR
List the four functions of blood
- Respiratory
- Nutritional
- Excretory
- Defensive
- Regulatory
