Mitosis And Meiosis Flashcards

1
Q

What is mitosis

A

Mitosis is a type of cell division that produces genetically identical daughter cells with a similar copy of the parents original chromosomes. (Full set of chromosomes)

Q

Compare between mitosis and meiosis-

A

Mitosis
Diploid
46 chromosomes
Cell divides once
Identical daughter cells
Development, repair of tissues, growth
Asexual
Somatic cells (all other cells)
Forms 2 cells

Meiosis
Haploid cell
23 chromosomes
Cell divides twice
Non identical cells (variation possible)
Forms cell for gametes

Haploid cells

A

Only have a single set of chromosomes with only 1 version of chromosome

Q

Why is there variation in meiosis

A

Due to sexual reproduction, the genetic information from both parents are combined so a mixing of genes take place which leads to genetic variation.

Q

What happens to the chromosomes when a cell divides by mitosis

A

the chromosomes to be copied then the cell divides twice which also divides and halves the number of chromosomes.

Q

What is therapeutic cloning?

A

Cells from a patients body is used to create a cloned early embryo of themselves.
These stem cells from the patients embryo are able to be used for medical treatments/creating new organs.
Since the stem cells have the same genes as the patient, the new organs created will not be rejected from the patients body.

Q

What is an embryonic stem cell?

A

Esc are found in the human embryo and they’re are able to differentiate into all cell types which then the cells are able to adapt a function and a specific structure.

13
Q

Why does an embryonic stem cell raise ethical issues?

A

Since esc are obtained by removing cells from the human embryo, which is an ethical issue since it destroys a potential life.

Q

What are stem cells?

A

Cells that are undifferentiated and unspecialised but have the potential to form different cell types.

Q

Compare between embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells

A

Esc-
Can differentiate into all cell types. Can treat a wide range of diseases. Found in the human embryo. Can divide continuously for self renewal. Raises ethical issues due to the embryo not being able to consent.

Asc-
Can differentiate into blood cells only (platelets, rbc, wbc). Found in the bone marrow. Adults are able to give consent for the procedure so it does not raise ethical issues. Can treat fewer diseases due to not being able to differentiate into all cell types.

16
Q

How does differentiated cells form?

A

Genes switch on and off

17
Q

What is an adult stem cell?

A

Asc are found in the bone marrow and Asc are able to differentiate into blood cells (platelets, rbc, wbc). Can create new blood cells to replace the damaged cells.

18
Q

Explain the process of mitosis division-

A

The chromosomes are copied from the original parent cell. The cell divides once forming 2 identical daughter cells. Each daughter cell has 4 chromosomes which are identical to the parent cell.

19
Q

Explain the process of meiosis cell division-

A

The chromosomes are copied from the original parent cell, the cell divides twice forming 4 gametes with a single set of chromosomes, which are haploid cells.

20
Q

Why does nearly every organism have an even set of chromosomes?

A

Chromosomes come in pairs, each pair of chromosomes is inherited from each parent.

21
Q

Why is mitosis important?

A

For growth development, repair of tissues.
Mitosis replaces damaged/worn out cells by forming new cells

22
Q

How are tumours caused ? ;)

A

Due to uncontrollable cell division.

23
Q

What will be caused if there was changes in cells that led to uncontrollable cell growth

A

Cancer

24
Q

How do tumours spread to other parts of the body?

A

Tumours can only metastasize and spread to other parts of the body via the blood.

25
Q

What is Metastasize?

A

When cancer cells spread from where they were first formed to other parts of the body.

26
Q

How can tumours be caused?

A

Ionizing radiation (X-rays, UV light) and carcinogens which cause mutations (asbestos, tobacco)

27
Q

State the Difference in animal cells and plant cells

A
