Mitosis And Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
Mitosis
Division of the cell nucleus
First stage in cell division
Describes IPMAT
Cell division
Process by which a cell divides into 2 new daughter cells
Daughter cells are completely identical
Cytokinesis
Division of the cytoplasm
Second stage of cell division
Ensures that all the correct cytoplasm gets to each identical cell
Interphase
In between cell division, a period of growth
Cell spends 99.999% of its life in this stage (according to dad)
Cell cycle
Series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide (IPMAT)
See cell video
Prophase
First and longest phase of mitosis
Chromosomes become visible and double, centrioles move and make up the spindle, nuclear envelope disappears
P=perfectly clear
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
M=middle
Anaphase
Sister chromatids move away from each other
See cell video
Ensures the correct amount of DNA in each identical cell
Telophase
Chromosomes lose shape, cell membrane pinches in, nuclear envelope re forms
In plant cells the cell wall regrows
Chromosomes
Visible genetic material
Paired chromatids
Needed for life, both human and cellular
Sister chromatids
Two identical connected strands of a chromosome
Daughters of the original cell
Chromatin
Thin, unorganized genetic material
Cancer
U controlled cell growth
Does not respond to normal growth regulation signals
Many different types of cancers due to many different carcinogens
Asexual reproduction
Process by which a single parent reproduces by itself
Fairly quick, it does not need to find a partner
DNA replication
Process by which DNA copies itself
