Mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is For growth, replication, reparation and reproduction of body cells. It is a process in which one parent cell divides into 2 daughter cells.
What happens in the process?
The cell goes through 4 stages of mitosis which are prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. But before all these phases these cells go through interphase which is not considered a phase but this is for making sure DNA replication is done correctly, cells are working properly and growth.
What is prophase?
Prophase is where our nucleus disassembles, the chromosomes thicken up and become more visible and spindles appear.
What is metaphase?
Metaphase is where our chromosomes line up in the middle and spindles move toward the centromere of chromosomes
what is anaphase?
Anaphase is where our chromosomes get pulled to the end of cell through fibers of spindles.
What is telophase?
Telophase is where one parent cell successfully divides into two daughter cells. In telophase two nuclei are formed around the chromosomes and spindles disappear.
What is cytokinesis?
Cytokinesis is when physically the cytoplasm of the parent cell is divided into two. After cytokinesis the cells have divided and go back into the stage of interphase.
What is the importance of mitosis?
The importance of mitosis is that without mitosis our body height wouldn’t grow and the cuts won’t repair as mitosis is responsible for repairment and division of body cells.
How does mitosis ensure that DNA is replicated?
When the cells of mitosis are divided half chromosomes are in one cell and the other one contains the other half. As chromosomes contain units as chromatids which are replicated strands of DNA every cell has the same DNA as any other cell in our body.
