Mitosis Flashcards
Mitosis
A type of cell division that results in 2 identical daughter cells. Somatic cells undergo mitosis. Mitosis is done for cell growth and repair.
Phases of Mitosis
can be abbreviated as PMAT. Prophase, Anaphase, Metaphase, and Telophase (a late stage of telophase is cytokinesis when the cytoplasm splits into the 2 new cells.)
Interphase
This is the majority of a cell’s life. During interphase, the cell does it’s regular cellular functions and grows. Also, each chromosome (in the chromatin) is replicated to form to chromatids.
Prophase
The nuclear membrane breaks down. The 2 chromatid chromosomes become visible. Spindle fibers form from the centrioles.
Metaphase
The chromosomes line up in the center of the cell. They are attached to the spindle fibers from the centrioles.
Telophase
The cell membrane breaks down and the cell begins to evenly split into 2 identical daughter cells. Chromosomes uncoil and become chromatin.
Cytokinesis
Cytoplasm splits and the cell divides into 2 diploids (meaning, containing a complete set of chromosomes) daughter cells.
