DNA Structure Flashcards
DNA
Stands For: Deoxyribonucleic Acid
It is a chemical, molecular code that carries genetic info. This code instructs your cells how to behave.
DNA Structure
DNA is made of the backbone and nitrogen-rich bases. The backbone is made of sugar (deoxyribose) and phosphate molecules. The backbone is in the shape of a double helix. The bases make up the genetic code.
Nucleotide
A deoxyribose + Phosphate molecule + base = nucleotide.
Gene
A small section of a chromosome. A gene consists of genetic code. A chromosome contains between 200 - 2000 genes.
Chromosome
A tightly coiled DNA strand held together by a centromere.
Genetic code
The order of base pairs along a DNA strand. This codes for the behaviour of the proteins/organelles/cell.
of Human Chromosomes
46 (23 pairs). In a chromosome pair, one comes from the mother and the other from the father.
2 Types of Chromosomes
Autosomal & Sex chromosomes. Sex: males - XY females - XX.
Proteins
Made of amino acids. Each amino acid is coded by a sequence of 3 nucleotides. There are many types of proteins including structural, enzymes & regulatory (hormones).
Nitrogen Bases
There are 4 bases that make up all genetic code. Adenine (A), Thymine (T), Cytosine (C) and Guanine (G).
