Mitosis Flashcards
Where does mitosis happen?
In the body. Any cell except those that produce gametes
What’s the name for the dividing cells?
Parent cell
What’s the name for the 2 new cells?
Daughter cells. They are identical to the parent
What does mitosis make?
Two genetically identical cells, that are diploid
What’s the first stage of mitosis, what happens?
Interphase
The cell begins to divide. By the end chromosomes start to become visible. DNA copied
What’s the second stage, what happens?
Prophase
The DNA replicates to form to copies of each chromosomes, two chromatids
What’s the third stage of mitosis, what happens?
Metaphase
The nuclear membrane breaks down. The chromosomes line up across the centre of the cell
What’s the forth stage of mitosis, what happens?
Anaphase
One set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the cell and the nucleus divides
Spindle fibres disappear and a new nuclear membrane forms round each group of chromosomes
What’s the fifth stage of mitosis, what happens?
Telophase
The cell splits into two
Cytokinesis
