In And Out Of Cells Flashcards
What is a solute?
A dissolved substance. Moves into and out of cells by diffusion and active transport
What is osmosis?
The transportation of water. The net movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane
Explain diffusion
More molecules move from the higher conc. to the lower conc., through the gaps in the partially permeable membrane. Net movement is down the concentration gradient
What’s diffusion important for in the body?
Move oxygen into cells and remove carbon dioxide
Explain active transport
More particles move from the low conc. to the high conc. through the gaps in the partially permeable membrane. Net movement is against the concentration gradient
What’s active transport important for in the body?
It makes it possible for cells to absorb ions from very dilute solutions. Root hair cells absorbs ions from very dilute solutions. They absorb minerals from soil water. The small intestine cells absorb glucose from digested food in the gut into the body
Define osmosis
The net movement of water molecules form a region of higher water concentration to a lower water concentration across a partially permeable membrane
