Microscopes Flashcards
What is a light microscope?
It uses light to magnify an object. The greatest possible magnification is about x2000
What is an electron microscope?
It uses electrons to view an object. This means you can view an object up to around x10 million.
You can see objects in cells more clearly and in far more detail
What’s the relationship between magnification, image size and real size?
Magnification= image size over real size
How do you calculate the magnification of the cells seen through a microscope?
Magnification of object= mag of eyepiece x mag of objective
How do you use a light microscope?
Always start with the lowest power objective under the eyepiece
Clip the slide securely under the stage
Adjust the light source (mirror) so that the light goes up through the slide
What’s a coarse focusing wheel?
The bigger wheel on a light microscope used to focus on the slide
What’s the fine focusing wheel?
The small wheel on the light microscope which is used to bring the cell back into focus after adjusting the power objective
