Mitosis Flashcards
What are the new cells used for?

Growth- 2 haploid cells fuse together to form a diploid cell, all genetic information is needed for new organisms. Genetically identical
Repair- if cells damage / die it is important that new cells produced have identical structures and function to ones that have been lost
Reproduction - single-celled organisms divide by mitosis to give 2 new organisms, each organisms is genetically identical to parent cell
What is the formal for mitotic index
Number of cells undergoing mitosis
______________________________
Total number of cells
What are the stages of mitosis
Propose
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
What happens during propose
Chromosomes become visible and the nuclear membrane disintegrates and the nucleolus disappears
They become visible as they contract/condense
What happened in the metaphase stage
Spindle fibres form, chromosomes line up on the centre of the cell (at the equator) and line up not in pairs
What happens in anaphase stage
Spindle fibres attached to the chromatids contract. Chromatids are pulled towards poles and these are attached by centromere
What happens in the telophase stage
Chromosomes reach poles and becomes indistinct, nuclear membrane reforms as well as the nucleolus and the spindle fibres disintegrates
How many daughter cells does mitosis produce
2 that have the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell
