mitosis Flashcards
mitosis
asexual cell division
cell cycle
the process of a cell dividing into two identical ones
what happens during interphase?
the longest part of the phase of mitosis
during this process the DNA is replicating
G1 - cell grows
S - DNA replicated (copy)
G2 - The growth/proteins and organelles are being made
prophase
Double chromosomes become visible (sister)
-two chromosomes connected by a centromere
-nuclear membrane dissapears
-spindles start forming and attatched to centrioles
metaphase
3rd phase where spindle is fully formed and chromosomes are lined up in a row at the Equatorial Plane (middle)
anaphase
4th stage where the double chromosomes start seperating apart and pulled towards the poles
telophase
final stage of mitosis where chromosomes reach poles
cytokinesis
after mitosis, not a phase. completed cell division dividing the cytoplasm
goal of mitosis
cells in a nucleus divide into daughter cells (identical cells)
binary fusion
parent organism divided into two equal parts, with the same parent ex: (bacteria)
budding
parent organism divided into two unequal parts ex: (hydra, yeast, sponges)
sporulation
(spitting) when an organism releases large number of small single cells and germinates to form new individuals ex (mold, fungi, algae
vegetative propagation
when a plant reproduces asexually with the use of bulbs, tubers, runners, and rhizomes or artificially through graphing, atting)
regeneration
the ability of an organism to regrow its losts body parts (lizards, starfish,)
