Mitosis Flashcards
Why do cells divide?
1.) Growth
2.) Maintenance
3.) Repair
4.) Reproduction
What happens during the Growth period for Single Cells?
- Proteins and organelles accumulate in the cytoplasm
- Surface Area of the plasma membrane becomes inadequate
- Volume of the cytoplasm increases at a faster rate than surface area of the plasma membrane
Why does the Plasma membrane become inadequate?
Cells absorb nutrients and excrete wastes in the plasma membrane, but as the cytoplasm’s volume increases, the materials have to pass through the cytoplasm instead, making the plasma membrane inadequate.
What happens during the Growth period for whole organisms? Provide an example.
The process where single celled zygotes (fertilized eggs) transition into multicellular organisms. (Baby-Teen-Adult)
What happens during the Maintenance period
Any cells that are worn out/die, get replaced by new ones.
What happens during the Repair period?
Regenerate any damaged tissues (cut on finger)
What happens during the Reproduction period?
Make new individuals
In order for a cell to develop properly after cell division…
They have to be duplicated exactly the same as their origin, meaning they have to have the ability to pass on their genetic material.
What process is Fertilization considered?
Gamete production
What process is an embryo becoming an adult, and a zygote becoming an embryo considered?
Somatic production
Draw a diagram of the process between an adult male and adult woman to their child.
How many chromosomes does sperm have?
23 chromosomes
How many chromosomes does a zygote have?
46 chromosomes
