Cloning Flashcards
What is Cloning
When identical offspring is formed using a single cell/tissue of a parent organism
What is the exception with cloning
The cell must be totipotent, a type of stem cell that can become any type of cell plus a placental cell, they are undifferentiated.
In mammals, up till when are we totipotent?
We are totipotent till the morula stage (16 cell stage)
What is pluripotent?
A type of stem cell that can become anything EXCEPT placental cells. (Inner mass of a blastocyst)
What is multipotent?
A type of stem cell that can become more than one cell type but is more limited than pluripotent. (Adult stem cells/cord blood cells.)
What is parthenogenesis?
When an individual grows from an unfertilized egg.
What is the difference between Identical and Fraternal Twins?
Identical is monozygotic and fraternal is dizygotic, Identical twins form when the cell breaks free from the undifferentiated embryo and develops on its own, and the fraternal twins occur when two eggs are fertilized at the same time.
Identical twins share the same DNA whereas fraternal twins dont!
