Genetic Material in Eukaryotes Flashcards
Two States of Genetic Material
1.) Chromatin (during Interphase)
2.) Chromosomes (during cell division)
Which is condensed and which is Uncondensed what does this mean?
Chromatin is uncondensed and chromosomes are condensed, this simply means that they are visible under a microscope.
Define a Nucleosome
A nucleosome is the basic structural unit, to put it simply it is DNA coiled around EIGHT histones.
Define Chromosomes
Chromosomes are distinct groupings of condensed chromatin.
Why do chromosomes coil?
They coil into compact structures, this allows for the chromatids to separate without tangling during cell division
What are chromatids?
A chromosome that gets replicated.
What are the chromatids held together with?
A centromere.
What are kinetochores
They are proteins associated with the centromere, essentially spindle fibres attached to the chromosome during cell division
