Mitosis Flashcards
Why do organisms do mitosis?
1 - Asexual reproduction
2- Growth
3- Tissue repair
Describe Prophase
-Chromosomes condense and first become visible
- Centrioles move to poles
- Spindle fibres develop
-Nuclear envelope breaks down and nucleolus disappears
Describe Metaphase
-Chromosomes seen to be made up of 2 chromatids
- Chromatids joined by the centromere
- Chromosomes pulled by spindle apparatus and begin to arrange themselves across equator of cell
Describe Anaphase
-Centromeres divide in 2 and spindle fibres pull the individual chromatids apart
- Chromatids move to opposite poles
- Energy provided by Mitochondria
Describe Telophase
- Chromosomes reach poles
- Become indistinct
- Nuclear envelope reforms, Nucleolus reforms
- Spindle disintegrates
What happens at Cytokensis?
Cell wall divides
Why do we use Hydrochloric Acid in the Mitosis practical
Acid softens and loosens root tissues, so cells can be squashed
Why do we stain the cells?
To make the chromosomes visible
Why do we squash cells?
To make it one cell thick so light can pass through when viewing from a microscope
Why do we use a mounted needle?
To lower the cover slip and prevent air bubbles under the cover slip
