Mitosis Flashcards
Cell Cycle
When cells in an organism go through a cycle of growth, development, and division.
Mitosis
The process by which a parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells
Interphase
The stage of the cell cycle between periods of mitosis in witch the cell grows
Prophase
The first phase of mitosis during which chromosomes condense and the nuclear membrane starts to disappear
Metaphase
The second phase of mitosis during which chromosomes line up along the center of the cell
Anaphase
The third phase of mitosis during which each chromosome is pulled apart by spindle fibers and resulting daughter chromosomes are pulled to the opposite sides of the cell
Telophase
The fourth and final phase of mitosis during which a nuclear membrane forms around chromosomes become unwound DNA in a newly formed nucleus
Cytokinesis
A stage of the cell cycle during in which the cell membrane pinched in and the cytoplasm divides into two daughter cells after mitosis.
Centriole
An organelle found near the nucleus in animal cells that forms the spindle fibers that pull chromosomes apart during mitosis
Chromosome
The part of a cell that contains genes
DNA
The chemical found in cells that is the main component of chromosomes and carries genetic information
Cerntromere
A structure that holds the sister chromatids togeather
Sister cromatids
Two identical chromatids that make up a duplicated chromosome
Daughter cell
The result of the cell cycle where two genetically identical cells are formed
