Mitosis Flashcards
What is Mitosis?
A type of cell division, reproduces identical body cells (does not create sex cells)
What happens in interphase?
The cell grows, DNA replication and typical cell functions occur. 90% of cell cycle
What are the 4 stages of mitosis?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase
What happens in prophase?
Chromosomes condense, the nucleus is visible
What happens in Metaphase?
Chromosomes line up in the middle (no nucleus)
What happens in Anaphase?
Chromosomes move away to opposite sides of the cell, using spindle fibers
What happens in Telophase?
Chromosomes are on opposite sides of the cell, a new nucleus is formed
What is cytokinesis?
This is the final separation, this splits the cytoplasm
What is cytokinesis?
This is the final separation, this splits the cytoplasm
What are the 5 main stages of the cell cycle?
M phase, Checkpoints, G1, G2, G0 and S phase
What happens in M phase?
cytokinesis and mitosis
What happens in G1 and G2?
The cell grows
What happens in S phase?
DNA synthesis, the DNA replicates
What happens in G0?
This is a resting phase, there is no division
What are checkpoints for?
Check for proper growth, replication and cell functions
