MITOCONDRIA Flashcards
main function of Mitocondrion
they turn glucose into energy
describe the structure of the Mitocondrion
(double membrane bound organelle)
Outer membrane
Inner membrane
Cristae (folds in inner membrane)
Matrix
function of mitocondria
aerobic respiration (oxygenated) turns glucose into energy
produces ATP (powers the chemical reactions)
ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate
currency for the cell
enzyme that carries out aerobic respiration
ATD synthase
Pi
Phosphate ion
describe the cellular respiration reaction
glucose + oxygen = carbon + water
C6 H12 O6 + 602 = 6C02 + 6H20
cristae
folds on the inner membrane that houses the matrix (gel like material)
area between inner membrane and outer membrane
intermembrane space
describe the basics of Glycolysis
a 6 carbon sugar diphosphate is split into two 3 carbon phosphates (at the expense of 2ATP)
This is the energy consumption phase ^
UNFINISHED
x2 Pyruvate
where does glycolysis occur
in the cytoplasm (not the mitocondria)
where does the Krebs cycle occur?
in the mitocondrion
describe the basics of the krebs cycle
oxidation of Pyruvate into Acetylcoenzyme A (carbon molecule)
(1 carbon molecule released)
citrate synthase combines AcetylcoA with a 4 carbon molecule to produce a 6 carbon molecule (citrate)
UNFINISHED
Describe the link reaction
pyruvate is decarboxylated to produce C02
it is then oxidised to cause the reduction of NAD+ to NADH
these reactions then produce an Acetate compound which then attaches to COA
This forms 2 molecules of ACETYL COA
NAD+ is what?
an electron carrier
