Q

describe the basics of the krebs cycle

A

oxidation of Pyruvate into Acetylcoenzyme A (carbon molecule)
(1 carbon molecule released)

citrate synthase combines AcetylcoA with a 4 carbon molecule to produce a 6 carbon molecule (citrate)

Q

Describe the link reaction

A

pyruvate is decarboxylated to produce C02

it is then oxidised to cause the reduction of NAD+ to NADH

these reactions then produce an Acetate compound which then attaches to COA

This forms 2 molecules of ACETYL COA

Q

where does the link reaction occur?

A

in the matrix of the mitocondrion

17
Q

in one sentence, describe the role of the mitochondria

A

the mitochondria releases energy, in the form ATP via aerobic respiration.

This occurs during the reactions: krebs cycle, and electron transport chain.

these processes occur within the matrix and the inner membrane
