CELL THEORY Flashcards
Who is Robert Hooke?
An English scientist, who, using a microscope, was the first to visualise a microorganism
What are all living things made up of?
Cells
What is the cells role?
Absorb, transfer + process nutrients
Facilitate growth
Allow active transport
Produce energy
What are cell characteristics?
A surrounding membrane
Protoplasm
Organelles - structures for cell function
Nucleus - control centre w/DNA info
Basics of how to prepare a slide
Obtain sample (such as swab) + smear on slide
Add a chemical stain (such as iodine)
Lower a coverslip slide onto the cells, ensuring to be gentle to prevent air bubbles
Why do Animal Cells have more mitocondria?
Because they require more energy (movement)
Higher metabolic rate
Why do Plant cells have less mitocondria?
Because they require less energy (little to no movement)
Lower metabolic rate
Contains chloroplasts to synthesise own food
List all the organelles only found in Plant Cells
Vacuole
Chloroplasts
Cell wall
List all the organelles found in both animal and plant cells
Nucleus Nucleolus Nuclear Envelope Cell Wall Cell Membrane Gorgi Apperatus Smooth ER Rough ER Mitocondrion Ribosome Chloroplast Cytoplasm
Job of the nucleolus?
Translates the DNA in the Nucleus into RNA the ribosome can use to create proteins.
