MISE-EN-SCENE Flashcards
Costume, hair & makeup
Costume can indicate a characters personality, social status and job. It can also tell us if the film is set in the present or the past and what culture or society the film revolves around. Certain costumes are also identified closely with genre.
Setting & props
Setting usually informs us of time and place, but can also be crucial for defining the atmosphere. Props are the term we give to objects in the setting which play a part in the action, rather than being part of the background.
Lighting & Coloured
Lighting aimed to give a particular scene a very realistic look or bring out the dramatic nature of it, and we associate different lighting styles with different genres. It can be used for example to highlight characters or objects ; or make something or someone mysterious by shading.
Facial expression & body language -
The way in which we use our facial expressions and body languages are strong indicators of how we are feeling, which is also the case in film.
Positioning of characters & objects within the frame -
Positioning is often used to highlight certain people or objects within the frame. Obviously anything in the foreground grabs out immediate attention, whilst that in the middle ground less and the background is often reserved for the least important elements.
