Miscellaneous vocabs Flashcards
Alloy
a metal made by combining two or more metallic elements, especially to give greater strength or resistance to corrosion.
Alkalis
a chemical compound that neutralizes or effervesces with acids and turns litmus blue; typically, a caustic or corrosive substance of this kind such as lime or soda.
“flint is not subject to chemical weathering except by strong alkalis”
Fermentation
the chemical breakdown of a substance by bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms, typically involving effervescence and the giving off of heat.
the process of fermentation involved in the making of beer, wine, and liquor, in which sugars are converted to ethyl alcohol.
Distillation
1.) the action of purifying a liquid by a process of heating and cooling.
“the petroleum distillation process”
2.) the extraction of the essential meaning or most important aspects of something.
“the film is a distillation of personal experiences”
Sterol
any of a group of naturally occurring unsaturated steroid alcohols, typically waxy solids.
Precursor
1.) a person or thing that comes before another of the same kind; a forerunner.
“a three-stringed precursor of the violin”
2.) a substance from which another is formed, especially by metabolic reaction.
“pepsinogen is the inactive precursor of pepsin”
Oxidize
1.) combine or become combined chemically with oxygen.
“when coal is burned any sulfur is oxidized to sulfur dioxide”
2.) undergo or cause to undergo a reaction in which electrons are lost to another species.
“iron (II) compounds are slowly oxidized by air to form iron (III) compounds”
Effervescence
bubbles in a liquid; fizz.
“the effervescence of sparkling wine”
Saturated
1.) holding as much water or moisture as can be absorbed; thoroughly soaked.
“a mass of saturated air decreases in temperature as it rises in the atmosphere”
2.) (of an organic molecule) containing the greatest possible number of hydrogen atoms, and so having no carbon–carbon double or triple bonds.
“saturated hydrocarbons”
Unsaturated
(of organic molecules) having carbon–carbon double or triple bonds and therefore not containing the greatest possible number of hydrogen atoms for the number of carbons.
denoting fats containing a high proportion of fatty acid molecules with at least one double bond, considered to be healthier in the diet than saturated fats.
Tentative
1 : not fully worked out or developed tentative plans.
2 : hesitant, uncertain a tentative smile. tentative. noun.

4 : a fibrous cartilage within a joint especially of the knee.
nominal
1.) (of a role or status) existing in name only.
“Thailand retained nominal independence under Japanese military occupation”
2.) (of a price or amount of money) very small; far below the real value or cost.
“some firms charge only a nominal fee for the service”
Diatomic
consisting of two atoms.
“only diatomic molecules are easy to study in this way, as larger molecules invariably fragment”
Isomer
- CHEMISTRY
each of two or more compounds with the same formula but a different arrangement of atoms in the molecule and different properties.
2.
PHYSICS
each of two or more atomic nuclei that have the same atomic number and the same mass number but different energy states.
