Introduction to Chemistry Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Scientific Theory?

A

The path of discovery that leads from question and observation to law or hypothesis to theory, combined with experimental verification of the hypothesis and any necessary modification of the theory.

Q

What is a Law?

A

Summarizes a vast number of experimental observations and describe or predict some facet of the natural world.

Q

What is a Theory?

A

Well substantiated, comprehensive, testable explanations of particular aspects of nature. Theories can be modified if new data becomes available.

Q

What is the Macroscopic Domain?

A

It is the realm of everyday things that are large enough to be sensed directly by human sight or touch. IE: Food you eat, and breeze you feel.

Q

What is the Microscopic Domain?

A

Often visited in the imagination some aspects of the microscopic domain are visible through standard optical microscopes for examples many biological cells, or with more sophisticated instruments capable of imaging even smaller entities such as molecules or atoms. Most subjects in the microscopic domain of chemistry are too small to be seen even with the most advanced microscopes and can only be pictured in the mind. Other components include ions, electrons, protons, neutrons and chemical bonds.

Q

What is the Symbolic Domain?

A

Contains the specialized language used to represent components of the macroscopic and microscopic domains. Chemical symbols such as those on the periodic table, chemical formulas, and chemical equations, graphs, drawings and calculations are part of the symbolic domain.
