Why is the digestive system known as the second brain?

A

Refers to the enteric nervous system (ENS) specifically. the two thin layers of nerve cells wrapped around the lining of the gastrointestinal tract from esophagus to rectum.
Both use the same chemicals and cells to help digest and alert the brain when something is wrong.
